  • I think this is a reasonable possibility because if his mother or relative was living up there, he would at least tell them that he's not coming back in Bright as Day. He just decided he would stay and didn't seem too sad that he isn't going back, seems like he has no relation ties to anyone on the surface. If he did have a mom up there, he would at least say good-bye. It also makes sense since when his father disappeared, it seems no one in the neighborhood tried to look for either Will Shane and Eli was still living in the same house. So did Eli live alone for five years after his father's disapperance?

    • Well, at the very start of the series Eli was 10, so I doubt he lived alone.  I'd guess that his family is a sort of dropped/ignored plot thread, since only other members of his family who have taken up the title of the Shane have been shown or mentioned.

    • Some children, not all, are capable of taking care of themselves at a young age, so maybe Eli did. If Eli lived with just Will Shane, he would have learned to take care of himself as his father would have not been home that often.. Perhaps here was a kind neighbor who checked in every so often with Eli ever since Will vanished. Will didn't seem to be concerned about his wife, so maybe he did have one but she either died/left. I hope they elaborate more in the TV Movie coming up...

    • This is true.  Although if Eli only lived with his father, that raises the question of where they got the money to buy anything.  It doesn't seem feasible to move large furniture out of SlugTerra (or food, with the frequency needed for perishables that can't be frozen for long periods of time) and trading SlugTerran gold for money on the surface could lead to some questions that can't be answered without revealing the existence of SlugTerra.

    • Maybe Eli's mother knows the risk of being a Shane and will think Eli perished in ST due to his absents

    • @Nightfighter5:

If Eli did have a mother, why didn't he bother to at least send Burpy up with a note or something to tell her that he decided to live in Slugterra? Eli does seem like a nice guy, so I don't think he wouldn't of just left without saying good-bye to his mom.

      @VariableCipher:

I had another theory. Will Shane didn't have to stay in Slugterra 24/7 right? Perhaps he spent like a month in Slugterra and a month in the Surface. Will could have had a part-time job up in the surface. Will also knew how to ride slugs, so maybe he could of just worked in Slugterra and just transported food to Eli via Slugs. When he disappeared, Eli might have just been around for a few weeks before someone realized Will Shane was missing.

Hrm...maybe Eli was just found with no parents, he could of possibly been taken to an orphanage to grow up. He might of just ran away from the orphanage to his house to collect gear and escaped into Slugterra. The possible reason that he wouldn't want to go back is that he has no real home up there. He even states that the Shane Gang is his family, so it could be that he didn't really have one for five years. Maybe that's why Eli was so understandable with Twist. He might have been an "orphan" too.

    • Good points!  In thinking on it a bit more, I think a very likely situation is that Eli was living with one of the previous Shanes who had retired.  Presumably, they didn't tell him too much about SlugTerra for his own safety, since it /is/ a really big secret and all, which would explain why Eli didn't know much upon first arriving.  They could have explained Will's frequent absences as him having a job that required a lot of travel.

Yea, that is a really good theory, but then how would the family tree look like? Apparently, it skipped Eli Shane's grandfather/mother. Uncle Jimmo was the previous Shane before Eli's dad and he apparently didn't have any sons. We don't know what happened to Uncle Jimmo, so he might not have been around anymore, leading to Will Shane becoming the next Shane.

Come on Nerd Corps, we need to know what happened up there to make Eli not want to go back.

    • I guess a lot hinges on how much the Shane family as a whole knows about SlugTerra and how much is only known by past/current/destined Shanes.

As for Eli not returning to the surface (and sealing the Drop route that's been open and unnoticed for 5+ years, so who knows how he's getting back down to SlugTerra if he ever finds the way out), all I'm really coming up with is Kord's comment about SlugSlinging just being more fun.  Which isn't really a good answer, but it's all I can think of.

        Loading editor
    • Yea, there are. I just wish Nerd Corps would expand on it a bit more. Eli's story could be very interesting.

That's information that has been left out. It seemd too easy for Eli just to say that he's not returning to where he was born. There most be a reason, I just hope that maybe in the Slugterra Movie, they'd elaborate on how Eli was like up there. He might be the one with the most saddest story.

    • Unfortunatly, unexplored backgrounds are an issue with SlugTerra.  Blakk is really the only character with an explored past.  Eli's life on the surface is all but ignored.  We know that Pronto was a King but ran away from his duties and we know that Kord's family wanted him to go into engineering.  We know nothing at all about Trixie's past.

It's also possible that this is just a shortcoming of NerdCorps shows in general.  I don't believe that I've seen Storm Hawks, but from what I remember about Dragon Booster there wasn't much in the way of character pasts there either.

ETA: Same may be true for Max Steel; I've only seen the first two parts.  NerdCorps is also known for having Token Female Characters, but at least in Max Steel it looks like said token female is an Action Mom, which is different for them.

    • Perhaps Nerd Corps intends to use these unclear backgrounds as a new opener to a possible new series. I met on deviantArt, an employee for Nerd Corps. I talked to her for a bit and the way she refused to answer my question whethere there was anything else for Slugterra after the movie is released, I infered that there could possibly be another TV Show and/or movie following it.

The only other Nerd Corps show I watched was Battle Force 5. We were promised a Movie; however the partner in crime for BF5 pulled the plug and the movie was neglected to be released in other countries. I don't think Disney will pull the plug because of the marketing and commercial sucess in the States as well as other places.

I see...maybe Max Steel doesn't really have a Token Female Character, or they've yet to introduce one. I don't watch Max Steel so I don't know.

    • I think maybe eli was on the surface then his dad would visit him every day and you know do father son things but in an episode i think it was with danna por she said "will shane would leave days at a time and never had an explanation for where he went." so i think thats where he would go to visit eli but im sure he wasnt alone there was probably some family with him somewere.

    • Maybe, but what happened during the five year period in which he was missing? What did Eli do? I just sent a message to NerdCorps about this issue to see if they will answer or plan to answer it in the future.

I personally starting to think that Eli lived in a dorm or something. They have highschool dorms (normally called boarding schools), maybe Eli lived there before coming to his house and taking his things to leave, but it did seem that Eli was living there.

Yes, it has been confirmed that Eli did have a mom on the surface and was raised by her, although I don't quite understand why Eli didn't bother to say bye. Maybe his mother will be making a brief apperance, but it is highly unlikely.

Eli knew how Twist felt because he lost his dad too. Do you think its possible for Eli to be an orphan, Eli has the exact same hair and eye colour as his dad, and sometimes they do the same moves like in ep 2 and 3.

I had initially thought that Eli could of been an oprhan. Definition of orphan is a child who has absent parents. We never heard or seen of his mother and that his father is in Slugterra, I assumed that he could be "considered" an orphan, since his mother and father are not present to take care of him.

Although my theory was proven false after I asked NerdCorps about Eli's past and they did confirm he lived with his mother, though I'm not sure whether or not she will be making an appearance in this franchise.

    • I feel REALLY bad for Eli's mother. First she has a son whose father can't be there all the time, and then he "dies" thus leaving her to take care of their child alone, then she purposely has to distance herself from her son so that he can depend on himself when he's fifteen, and then when is fifteen he moves out and is probably never going to see her again! I would hate to be in her shoes.

Actually it was revealed in the last episode that Eli lived with his uncle since he was 10.
