Slug Food is a necessary food that keeps slugs strong and healthy because a healthy slug is a happy slug and a healthy slug wins duels. It isn't supposed to be eaten by anything other than Slugs. It's a pellet-like food and variates from red to brown colours (passing by orange).
They can, of course, also eat normal food, but this is better for them.
There are other types of food that slugs eat, which resemble snacks, which is why people commonly refer to them as slug snacks. It is not mentioned in the show whether other creatures can indulge in the tasty snacks, but slugs seem to adore them. Their appearance resembles cheese balls, and from the crunch that we hear when the slugs eat them, states that they are crunchy too.
Slugs also have a specialized drink which other creatures including humans, cave trolls and molenoids also seem to enjoy. It is shown to be a red liquid, possibly cherry juice, with some white jelly-like cubes on top.
Slugs commonly use both slug food and snacks or sometimes even drinks to use as a reward when playing games like "Slug Cart Racing" or "Slug Card (a game similar to the real-life equivalent of 'Poker')"

When Slugs eat Slug Food, they often "personalise" it to their taste:
- an AquaBeek or other water Slug will put water on it/put it in water;
- a Flaringo or Infurnus will toast it;
- a Frostcrawler will freeze it, first.
